Matchroom Foundation completes the final brick in Refuge’s house build project with £25,000 donation

Matchroom Charitable Foundation is delighted to support Brick by Brick, a campaign to build two innovative refuge houses – homes where women escaping abusive partners, and any child or pet they bring with them, can be safe and recover – by Refuge, the largest domestic abuse organisation in the UK.

Refuge’s services support thousands of women and their children, helping them to overcome the physical, emotional, financial, and logistical impacts of abuse and rebuild their lives.

In 1971, Refuge opened it’s first refuge providing safe, temporary accommodation for women and children escaping domestic abuse. Refuge will never turn a woman away but communal refuges can’t accommodate every woman, for example if you have teenage sons, pets or a range of other needs that can’t be met in a shared living space. Persimmon Homes are leading the build of two semi-detached family homes that offer all the emotional and practical support of a shared refuge, but with its own front door.

In addition to these new homes, Brick by Brick simultaneously ensured that the wide-ranging truths of domestic abuse are told, so that everyone can understand the issue, know where to turn for help and support and to catalyse the change in society needed for a world free from domestic abuse. “On behalf of all of us at Refuge, I want to share my heartfelt to thanks to Matchroom Charitable Foundation for their incredible donation of £25,000 to our Brick by Brick campaign with The Independent. Thanks to your generosity we are building a second refuge home for survivors of domestic abuse which will be ready in the spring. This home will be a sanctuary, a safe space for women and their children to find their freedom and to start to rebuild their lives.” Abigail Ampofo, Refuge CEO
