Matchroom sport is delighted to make a £10,000 donation to charity Cyclists Fighting Cancer to go towards 20 lightweight bikes and trikes for children with cancer.
Cyclists Fighting Cancer is a Charity that helps children and young people up to and including the ages of 18 years old, living with and beyond cancer. They help children regain their physical fitness, strength, and confidence during their cancer treatment and into recovery. CFC achieve this by providing children with new bespoke lightweight bikes, adapted trikes and specialist advice and support from a Cancer Exercise Specialist. Exercise has been shown in numerous studies to be the single most effective way of improving both mental and physical wellness for people surviving cancer as well as reducing the recurrence of secondary cancers by up to 50%.
The donation will greatly help to counteract the effects of the disease, the most common side effects being loss of cardiovascular conditioning and muscle, amputations, balance issues, lack of self-esteem and confidence. Being active is a great way of forming and re-establishing positive, healthy relationships with family and friends and therefore reducing social isolation. A new bike is a simple but effective tool to bring about all these benefits in a child friendly form.
The benefits of receiving the bikes and trikes are far reaching, they include:
