London Wheelchair Rugby Club is the most successful wheelchair rugby club in the South East of England. They aim to provide opportunities through wheelchair rugby for disabled people at a social level all the way up to Paralympic glory.
By being one club with many teams, they can provide suitable levels of competition for our diverse range of players. The Club provides opportunities for experienced players to develop their skills with the view to being selected for the Great Britain Squad, and also continues to encourage new players to enter the sport and enjoy it’s social and recreational benefits.
The Foundation’s donation helped to fund their training, travel and equipment costs so that players can be left to concentrate on playing the sport they love.
Steve Palmer, Chairman of the Charity and x2 Paralympian said
“London Wheelchair Rugby Club supports people with serious physical impairments to play sport which means that there are a number of difficulties to over come that your average club doesn’t face. A decent number of our members are unable to work either full-time or enough to sustain a decent lifestyle on the income brought in. With the donation from Matchroom we are able to lift almost all of the costs relating to travel and competition. This allows our members to come to train and mix with others without the stress or worry about how to finance this physical and social outlet. As a club we cover equipment, travel and accommodation costs as well as support staff to help those that might need assistance away from their home set ups. We have a range of players at different levels that all train as one group. Some have competed at Paralympic level and others are here just for the social and interactive aspect of what we do but all are welcome.”
